The Abbotsford Canucks took the opening game of their opening-round playoff series on Wednesday night.

The AHL sees a three-game series to open the postseason for teams in the Pacific Division and the Canucks will play all the games at the higher-seed Colorado Eagles’ rink.

Abbotsford rolled into the playoffs, playing some of their best hockey of the season. They picked up four consecutive wins against the team that eliminated them from the AHL playoffs last season and have shown that they have fine-tuned their system to be prepared for the playoff hockey that is now upon them.

“I thought we finished the season really well,” said Abbotsford Head Coach Jeremy Colliton. “We won nine of our last 11 and it was more than just the results. We challenged the group to prepare better and play a playoff style. The guys really answered the call. We feel like our game is in a good place with how we're playing, and understanding what it takes to win playoff-style games. And that's a good feeling.”

The Abbotsford Canucks are one of the youngest teams in the AHL and Colliton has been able to see the 19 and 20-year-olds grow into more mature players from the experiences that they have gone through over the past couple of seasons.

"You need guys to feel comfortable in the big moments and understand what's important and what it takes to win,” said Colliton. “Sometimes just getting the puck out on the wall is as big as a goal. That's playoff hockey. Every moment is magnified, and you don’t fully understand it until you've lived it and gone through it and truly understand the fine line between winning and losing.”

Colliton is looking at his young guys to learn their lessons but also be leaders on the ice. Five of the top six scorers on the Canucks are 24 years old or younger. Sheldon Dries is the veteran of the group and scored a goal while adding an assist in the Canucks’ game-one win.

“These kids keep us feeling young,” said Dries with a laugh. "Johnny [Stevens] and I just turned 30, so we're creeping up there. But being around the guys, no matter how old you are, we get to be in a locker room every day with a group of great guys. It's awesome and it keeps me young so it's fun for sure.”

As much as there is fun to be had, Dries enjoys putting a little extra on his shoulders at this time of the year. He mentioned Matt Irwin, John Stevens and Christian Wolanin being guys who want to be there for the young guys as well.

“It just comes with the territory,” said Dries about providing advice from experience. “The longer you play, the more guys lean on you. Christian, Matty, and Johnny, we all want to be leaders on this team and do that on a nightly basis and there is no better time to do it than right now at playoff time.”

For a majority of the season, Artūrs Šilovs and Nikita Tolopilo have been the mainstays between the pipes, but the NHL team came calling, and Šilovs has taken over the role as the backup for the Vancouver Canucks while Nikita Tolopilo is also with the NHL club as their emergency backup goaltender or EBUG.

Zach Sawchenko got the start for Abbotsford in game one and stopped 28 of the 30 shots he faced in his playoff debut with the Canucks.

“Sawzy is awesome,” said Dries. “We have full confidence in him, and it hasn't been the easiest year for him, but he's been the best teammate day in and day out. He’s put in his time and he's one of the best teammates. We love that he can find this success in playoff time. It's a good feeling for our group.”

Linus Karlsson led the Abbotsford Canucks with 60 points (23g-37a) in 60 games played.

Sheldon Dries was the goals leader with 29 goals on the season.

Arshdeep Bains finished the year with a +18.

Abbotsford Canucks Take Game One as Their Quest for the Calder Cup Commenced in Colorado

The Abbotsford Canucks kicked off playoff hockey down in Loveland, Colorado to take on the Colorado Eagles for Round 1, Game 1.

The Canucks continued their tried and true 11 and 7 formation, but tonight Zach Sawchenko found himself starting between the pipes. Backing him up on defense is the duo of Christian Wolanin and Nick Cicek, followed by Matt Irwin and Filip Johansson. Akito Hirose and Cole McWard stuck together and Elias Pettersson capped off the back end.

Up front, no change to the offense as Aatu Räty and Linus Karlsson continued to bookend Max Sasson, and Sheldon Dries centered Tristen Nielsen and Marc Gatcomb. Aidan McDonough, John Stevens, and Arshdeep Bains follow suit, and Chase Wouters and Ty Glover round out the offensive power.

A quick start to the game, Arshdeep Bains picks up John Stevens’ rebound to put the Canucks up 1-0 just 1 minute and 56 seconds into the game. Quickly asserting their dominance in the game, but Canucks found themselves trying to kill off a penalty at the halfway mark in the period. Unfortunately, the Eagles used this to their advantage when Callahan Burke stickhandled his way through the Canucks, to tie the game up at 1.

The game was tied going into the second, and the Canucks found themselves playing their special teams more than anticipated, getting multiple penalty calls. The penalty kill got to work, this time successful. The scoring came first in this period when Sheldon Dries ripped home a shot from center to give the Canucks a 1-goal lead once again, around the 7-minute mark. The Eagles were quick to challenge them when Ivan Ivan got one past Sawchenko just a few minutes later to tie the game up at 2. Looking to pull ahead, Sheldon Dries became the hero once again and netted his 2 goals in a row with just 27 seconds left to play in the period. The Canucks headed into the final frame with 1 goal lead once again.

The Canucks looked to keep up the momentum in the third, using the lead to their advantage. Some great chances for both teams, but Sawchenko held on to make some big saves for the team. With just over a minute to play, and the score unchanged, the Eagles pulled their goalie to get an extra man, but the Canucks took advantage, with Linus Karlsson grabbing the empty netter to solidify the Canucks win. 

The Canucks take game one against Colorado 4-2, to put them up 1-0 in the series. They will look to secure a second win on Friday, and hopefully punch their tickets to the second round.

THE CANUCKS TAKE GAME 1 IN THE SERIES WITH A 4-2 VICTORY OVER THE EAGLES

The Abbotsford Canucks will begin the 2024 Calder Cup Playoffs on the road, as they will take on the Colorado Eagles in a best-of-three series for the First Round. All three games will be held at Blue FCU Arena in Loveland, Colorado.

The Canucks recently clinched their third postseason berth in as many seasons, finishing fifth in the AHL’s Pacific Division with a record of 40-25-5-2. The Eagles, AHL affiliate of the Colorado Avalanche, finished fourth in the Pacific Division standings with the exact same record as Abbotsford, but held the tiebreaker of 33 regulation victories against the Canucks’ 29 regulation victories.

CANUCKS TO FACE COLORADO IN FIRST ROUND OF CALDER CUP PLAYOFFS

Abbotsford, B.C. – Yesterday, the Abbotsford Canucks announced the winners of the 2023.24 Team Awards during Fan Appreciation Weekend. Four of the five awards given to players, including Most Valuable Player, Fan Favourite, Unsung Hero and Rookie of the Year, were voted on by fans from April 5 to 13.  


Arshdeep Bains: Most Valuable Player 

In his second season, Arshdeep Bains has been voted MVP of the Abbotsford Canucks. During the season, Bains has recorded career-highs across the board, besting his previous record for points, goals and assists. Tallying 52 points (15-37-52) 28 penalty minutes and a team high +18 in 57 games heading into the weekend, Bains has continued his strong play this season in Abbotsford. Bains also made his NHL debut on February 20/24 at Colorado, becoming the fourth Punjabi player in NHL history to play in the NHL. 

 
Arshdeep Bains: Fan Favourite 

In addition to winning MVP, Bains has also won the Fan Favourite Award for the 2023.24 season. Throughout the year, Bains has entertained fans with his creative moves and excellent finishes. He was named an All-Star this season and won the AHL All-Star MVP after recording the most points during the All-Star tournament (5 points, 2-3-5, 4 GP).  

 
Marc Gatcomb: Unsung Hero 

In his second full season with the Abbotsford Canucks, Marc Gatcomb has been voted as the team’s Unsung Hero. Playing in 59 games this season, Gatcomb more than doubled his previous career-highs in points, goals and assists. He has recorded 20 points (9-11-20) and 32 penalty minutes this season as of April 18. His timely plays and calm presence on the ice have provided the Canucks with consistent momentum throughout the season. 


Max Sasson: Rookie of the Year 

Recording 41 points (18-23-41), 30 penalty minutes and a +17 plus/minus rating as of April 18, Max Sasson has been voted as the Rookie of the Year of the Abbotsford Canucks. Sasson has made his presence felt this season, currently leading the Abbotsford Canucks with six game-winning goals. Throughout his rookie season, Sasson has taken strides on and off the ice, and has continued to improve his all-around game. 


Chase Wouters: Man of the Year 

For the second consecutive season, Chase Wouters has been named the Abbotsford Canucks Man of the Year. Wouters, in his second year as Captain, has continued to build upon his previous charity work in the Fraser Valley. He has volunteered with the Chilliwack Bowls of Hope Society, who provide lunches for children in local schools, visited local patients at Abbotsford Regional Hospital and Cancer Centre, in addition to participating in the Abbotsford Canucks KidsPlay Skate, helping teach over 100 youth to skate alongside his teammates.

The Abbotsford Canucks closed out their regular season tonight as they took on the Calgary Wranglers for their first consecutive game and their fan appreciation night.

Both teams swapped goalies tonight, with Nikita Tolopilo starting in net tonight for the Canucks, and Dustin Wolf between the pipes for the Wranglers. On defense, Christian Wolanin and Nick Cicek pair up, followed by Matt Irwin and Filip Johansson. Akito Hirose and Cole McWard lined up together, and Elias Pettersson slots in as the 7th defenceman once again.

Up front, Aatu Räty and Linus Karlsson bookended Max Sasson, followed by Sheldon Dries, Tristen Nielsen, and Marc Gatcomb. John Stevens centered Arshdeep Bains and Aidan McDonough, and Cooper Walker slots back in with Chase Wouters to round out Abbotsford’s lineup.

It was a quiet first period, a true testament to the skill of both netminders. The Canucks were all over the Wranglers, holding them to just 1 shot in the first 10 minutes, but Dustin Wolf held strong between the crease. Tolopilo also denied all shots that came his way, to keep the game scoreless into the second.

Calgary kicked off the second period quickly, with Sam Morton tipping in a shot from Willian Strömgren, to give the Wranglers an early lead. Halfway through the period, the Wranglers found themselves with a 2 goal lead when Sam Morton squeaked one through the Tolopilo for his 5th goal of the season. The response from the Canucks was quick when Linus Karlsson capitalized on his rebound cut the Wranglers lead in half. This goal came as his 23rd of the season, with assists credited to Arshdeep Bains and Cole McWard. 40 seconds later, Tristen Nielsen tipped in a Nick Cicek shot to tie up the game at 2.

Looking to pull ahead in the third period, the effort from both teams heightened. The period remained scoreless until the halfway point when fan-voted MVP Arshdeep Bains notched his 16th goal of the season, to give the Canucks the go-ahead and the game-winning goal.

The Canucks close out the regular season and sweep their 4-game series against the Wranglers in a 3-2 victory. The Canucks will await the results of tomorrow's Colorado vs Ontario game to solidify their spot in the standings.

The Canucks close out their regular season with a 3-2 Victory over the Wranglers. 

The Abbotsford Canucks continued their 4-game series against the Wranglers as they return home for their final two regular season home games.

Artūrs Šilovs returned to the Abbotsford Canucks lineup after starting in 3 games for the Vancouver Canucks. Connor Murphy got the start in net tonight for the Wranglers. On defense for the Canucks was the duo Christian Wolanin and Guillaume Brisebois, followed by Matt Irwin and Filip Johansson. Cole McWard also returned to the lineup tonight, and he paired up with Nick Cicek, and Elias Pettersson capped off the blue line as the 7th d-man.

Upfront, the Canucks chose to go with the same lineup as the previous two games against the Wranglers. Aatu Räty, Max Sasson, and Linus Karlsson kicked things off on offense, followed by Tristen Nielsen, Sheldon Dries, and Marc Gatcomb. Aidan McDonough and Arshdeep Bains bookended John Stevens, and Chase Wouters and Ty Glover paired up to solidify the group of forwards.

The Wranglers got the lone goal in the first period after Clark Bishop ripped one past Šilovs just 3 minutes into the game. The Canucks had some great chances but battled too many minutes in the box to successfully get on the board and were down 1-0 heading into the second period.

The middle frame was action-packed, with a total of 4 goals. The Canucks own Linus Karlsson tied it up just 1 minute and 42 seconds into the frame. Karlsson caught a pass from Aatu Räty in front of the net, where he netted his 22nd goal of the season. Around the halfway mark, Mitch McLain got himself on the scoresheet as he netted his 16th of the season and gave the Wranglers the lead once again. Just 59 seconds later, the Canucks had a faceoff in the offensive zone. Sheldon Dries shot straight from the faceoff and the puck found the back of Calgary’s net, unassisted, for his 29th goal of the year, and equalizer once again. A minute and a half later, Aidan McDonough joins the scoring party after a setup from Arshdeep Bains leaves Connor Murphy with a puck in his net for the 3rd time tonight. The Canucks had their first lead of the game heading into the final period.

The Canucks looked to maintain their lead and take home the 2 points in regulation, but the Wranglers has other plans when Jakob Pelletier snook one past Šilovs with just under 5 minutes to play and tie the game up at 3, and force overtime.

In overtime, a late hooking call to the Wranglers meant that the Canucks would get a man advantage, and with just 30 left to play, Christian Wolanin was there to rip one home and win it for Abbotsford.

The Canucks have one final regular season game tomorrow against the Wranglers, and they look to sweep this mini-series.

After a big second period, a late equalizer goal from the Wranglers forced the game into overtime, where the Canucks came up big.

THE CANUCKS COME UP WITH A BIG 4-3 OVERTIME VICTORY AGAINST THE WRANGLERS

Abbotsford, B.C. – After an exciting, action-packed 2023.24 season, the Abbotsford Canucks are excited to celebrate and thank their faithful fanbase on April 19th and 20th as they take on the Calgary Wranglers in their last two games of the regular season before the start of the playoffs.  

“The time has come to celebrate our amazing fans in the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley for all the support they have shown our team this season,” said Rick Comeau, General Manager, Abbotsford Centre. “The chance to show our appreciation to our dedicated fanbase as we close out the regular season and head towards the playoffs is something we look forward to every season. Together with the players, we are ready to host a weekend dedicated to our fans.” 

To thank their loyal fans two nights of events have been planned!  

Night One: Friday, April 19th  

April 19th will see a number of benefits for Season Ticket Members, including early doors, starting at 5:00 p.m. Members will also be granted a 25% discount at the team store between 5:00-6:00 p.m., as well as a 50% discount on food and beverage (non-alcoholic beverage) from 5:00-6:00 p.m. There will also be a Season Ticket Member Grand Prize of a Backyard Package including a BBQ Grill, courtesy of Blackwood Building Centre, an outdoor patio set, courtesy of Canadian Tire, and a $230 BBQ meat package from Lepp Farm.

Abbotsford Canucks to Celebrate 2023.24 Fan Appreciation Weekend 

The Abbotsford Canucks are once again playoff-bound and have a combination of youth and experience to feel good about what this group can do in a chase for the Calder Cup. 

Abbotsford is the youngest team in the AHL with an average age of 23.75 but they have the support of veteran leaders like John Stevens, Matt Irwin, Sheldon Dries, and Christian Wolanin. 

Irwin is the only player in his 30s on the Abbotsford roster and the 36-year-old certainly had to catch himself laughing this season when Sawyer Mynio joined the group and Irwin could say that he was literally twice the age of one of his teammates.

“It’s hilarious to me,” said Irwin with a hearty guffaw. “I was graduating high school when Sawyer was born. So, that doesn’t make me feel old at all.” 

Many of the players look up to Irwin for advice and as a guide on how to keep it light in the room but continue to stay focused. The joke around the Abbotsford room is that Irwin is one of the youngest players on the team because he is like a kid out there with how much fun he is having. 

The guys in the room love being able to hear stories from Irwin, who has played in 461 NHL games along with his 311 in the AHL. On top of the stories, Irwin brings a calming presence to every moment on the ice or away from it. This year has been a rollercoaster for the Canucks, and they have learned a lot about battling through adversity.

“You don’t go through a full season at any level without some ups and downs and I think there's benefits of going through those stretches throughout a season,” said Irwin. “There's a learning curve and an opportunity to grow as a group when you go through those ups and downs. And we have certainly done that this year.” 

At Irwin’s age, he does not take anything for granted. He knows he is fortunate to play the game of hockey for as long as he has and is happy to be a part of this young group in Abbotsford who have elevated expectations in the upcoming playoffs. 

Irwin claims he is not going into the room with intentions of preaching to the young players but does admit to actively being a sounding board for the young players including some of the young leaders like Jett Woo and Abbotsford captain Chase Wouters. 

“I enjoy helping these young players develop,” said Irwin. “If they have questions, I like to help them. They are teaching me lots of things too and what I try to always tell them is to enjoy the game and embrace the work.” 

Christian Wolanin is another veteran leader of the group who plays on the backend. Wolanin was named AHL defenceman of the year last season and though he battled an injury that kept him out of the lineup for two and half months, his presence in the lineup and locker room is something that his teammates welcome with open arms. 

Wolanin enjoys the chance to play with such a young group and it has helped him learn a lesson about how the world of professional hockey evolves so quickly. His approach to leadership is being as honest as he can with the young players who have yet to experience a lot in pro hockey. 

“I'm a pretty high-strung, emotional guy,” said Wolanin. “I am not afraid to say whatever is on my mind. And for me, I think it's good to be honest at this point of the year. It's good to be honest about how you're feeling. I'll be the first one to tell the guys when we get down to it that I'm nervous too. But we are all human and you're supposed to be nervous because it shows that we care.” 

The 29-year-old Wolanin views this next stretch of the year as a massively important one for the young players. He looks back at his first few years as a pro and can share the lessons he has learned about how every season that has success is a gift from all the work you have put in and you need to live in those moments and appreciate what is happening around you. 

Wolanin sees the Abbotsford organization as a wonderful place for young players to learn about the demands and expectations of pro hockey. 

“We have a good culture built here and everybody who comes in is welcomed and feels part of it,” said Wolanin. “This experience for them, and their individual journey, it’s nice for the young guys to just get these touches. Especially if they are going to play in the playoffs. You'll really see how bad you want it when you play in an American League playoff game. It’s an intense environment and a great test.” 

Each of Irwin and Wolanin do not view this time of the year as a spot where they need to do more for the group but instead, just want to be able to carry more of the load when challenging situations present themselves to the group. 

Wolanin spoke about hockey cliches being something that, though it is boring to talk about, are most important at this time of the year. 

Irwin is on the same page as Wolanin as to what he wants to do as a veteran at this time of the year. 

“I'm not sure there's anything that you want to do more, I think you just relay that message about by the way you prepare and how you compete in games at this time of the year,” said Irwin. “Understanding the in-game situations of blocking a shot, taking a hit to make a play, those things are what speak volumes to others or throughout the locker room rather than just words. So, for us as veterans and guys that have been around or played playoff games, whether it is at any level really. It's just more or less leading by example.” 

The Abbotsford Canucks close out their season next weekend with a pair of home games against the team that eliminated them from the playoffs last year, the Calgary Wranglers. 

A large amount of the roster that lost that second-round playoff series is back this season and has gained experience of what the AHL playoffs are all about. 

As the youngest team in the AHL, the Abbotsford Canucks continue to be in development mode. Still, with so many players losing their greenness in the AHL, the expectations inside that locker room continue to rise and the veterans’ experience helps them recognize that this team is coming together to be a contender in the AHL playoffs.

The Abbotsford Canucks are once again playoff-bound and feel good about what this group can do in a chase for the Calder Cup.

Christian Wolanin & Matt Irwin Help Lead Youngest Team in AHL Toward Playoff Run

Developing for the NHL is a long path, and the Canucks organization is committed to the AHL being where the last steps are taken along the winding road.

We are seeing late-season additions to the Abbotsford Canucks with Elias Pettersson (D-Petey), Ty Mueller, Sawyer Mynio and Jonathan Lekkerimäki joining their roster.

Vancouver Assistant General Manager & Abbotsford General Manager Ryan Johnson views the young players getting reps with the AHL club as a twofold gain for the players in their development.

He wants the prospects to continue playing hockey when their CHL, NCAA, or European Pro seasons end but also get comfortable with the Abbotsford coaches, staff, trainers, and environment.

Johnson also wants the young players to live the life of a professional player, even if it is just for a month or two. There are plenty of new difficulties in a young man’s life that Johnson likes the players to experience and conquer with the support of the team and fellow players.

“You want them to ask questions,” said Johnson. “You want it almost to be a tutorial or an education. You want them to leave here with as much knowledge as possible. It's great to communicate by text and phone but when you can sit in the same room or sit on the bench and watch a guy and talk to him about his game, you cannot replace that connection.”

“When we actually get to see the whites of their eyes, it's inspiring for all of us because we get them in and see their excitement and they get to have our resources that we have as an organization and have everybody be able to impact those players in a way that encourages them and creates excitement about their path.”

One player who made the commitment to the AHL path and is reaping the rewards is NCAA free agent signing from last season, Max Sasson.

Sasson was on one of the best lines in the NCAA during the 2022-23 year and had some options with other NHL teams but decided to sign an amateur tryout with the Abbotsford Canucks and an Entry-Level Contract with the Vancouver Canucks.

This gave him the chance to play for Abbotsford in the playoffs and be able to gain a ton of experience as a pro.

“We find this time propels them forward,” said Johnson. “Max Sasson is a great example from last year. He jumped in, practiced, and even played playoff hockey. From that whole experience and familiarity, he came back in September, and it felt like he has been with the organization for a couple of years.”

Sasson has continued to improve and has been and continues to be one of Abbotsford’s top centres this season.

He had to turn down NHL games to head down the path that he is currently on and though that was a difficult decision at the time, Sasson is extremely content with the decision he made one year ago.

“I'm very glad about my decision,” said Sasson. “Everyone wants to be in Vancouver and push for that. But knowing that I was probably going to be in Abbotsford this year, coming here at the end of last year and getting in the playoffs was huge. They were so hard, and that Calgary series was a battle. That helped me know what it was going to take. Yeah, I am very pleased with the decision to come here and work my way up.”

These young players who join Abbotsford late in the year get a chance to experience a lot and show the organization how they can commit to the standards that management is looking for.

Abbotsford Head Coach Jeremy Colliton explained what he is looking for from these fresh players who come to the team late in their season.

“Look like you can be a player,” he said with a smile. “The more competition we have, the better and if you look like you can help, we will play you. The players are going to get an opportunity in practice. We have two groups at times, and we are out there watching, and you get a pretty good feel for where guys are at.”

Colliton makes sure to do a lot of small area battle drills to test the inexperienced players out against the AHLers who have played all season long.

"If guys aren't ready to play yet, that's fine. That is not unexpected,” said Colliton. “But then for them, they get a picture of what it is going to take next year or down the road to be in that position. So, it's good for both sides for sure.”

Canucks management believes that this experience late in the AHL season is adding another step to the development of young players that may have not existed in the past.

“It’s almost a stepped-up development camp in the sense that they leave here with a lot of information, a lot of experience that we know is going to help them short term and long term and, in their career,” said Johnson.

The focus is getting players comfortable with the pro game in North America but there is a heavy focus on the prospects learning about the standards that this organization instills.

“There's a specific plan in place, details, values that stem right down from Rick Tocchet and his staff down to our youngest players that are in our system,” said Johnson. “Those are standards that they are showing our players on the ice in Abbotsford, we can start to instill that in them. And obviously, we have the staff and resources to do it.”

Late-Season Introduction to AHL: ‘A Stepped-Up Development Camp’

The Abbotsford Canucks take on the Calgary Wranglers once again, for their final road game of the regular season The Canucks are coming into this one after winning their last 4 road games.

Zach Sawchenko tapped in tonight, as he started between the pipes for the Canucks, as Oscar Dansk swapped in for the Wranglers. Just one change to the defensemen from last night, Elias Pettersson slotted back in as the team's 7th defenseman. Same as last night, Christian Wolanin and Guillaume Brisebois paired up, followed by Nick Cicek and Akito Hirose, as well as Matt Irwin and Filip Johansson.

Up front, no change to last night's 11 forwards, with Aatu Räty, Max Sasson, and Linus Karlsson kicking things off. Sheldon Dries continued to center Marc Gatcomb and Tristen Nielsen, and Aidan McDonough and Arshdeep Bains bookended John Stevens. Holding things together upfront is the duo of Chase Wouters and Ty Glover.

The game was off to a hot start, as the Wranglers were sent to the box just 59 seconds in, leaving the Canucks on their first power play of the game. They couldn’t get it done there, but it ignited the spark underneath them, eventually leading to Ty Glover netting the first goal of the game on a rebound from Marc Gatcomb.  The Canucks found themselves with a 1 goal lead just over 6 minutes into the game. A pair of penalties were dealt to each team throughout the duration of the period, but no one else found success that led to the puck crossing either goal line.

A slower second period, with just one penalty each time, but it was ultimately Rory Kerrins who squeaked the puck past Sawchenko around the halfway mark in the period to tie the game up at 1. Despite some close calls, Kerrins’ 16th goal of the season was the lone goal in the second period.

Looking to avoid overtime, the Canucks looked to pull ahead and find their go-ahead goal. Both teams hoped to find it, but a cross-ice feed from Sheldon Dries allowed Tristen Nielsen to notch his 15th of the season and put the Canucks up 2-1 with 10 minutes to play. Falling into the footsteps of last night’s game, the Canucks were up by one, and Calgary pulled their goalie with 3 minutes to go in a last-minute attempt to tie the game. Linus Karlsson was the lucky one to catch the loose puck and send it down to the empty net.

The Canucks come up with a big 3-1 victory over the Calgary Wranglers, sweep the roundtrip and take home all 4 points this weekend. They will return home and play the Wranglers two more times to close out the regular season.

THE CANUCKS CLOSE OUT THEIR ROAD SERIES AGAINST THE CALGARY WRANGLERS WITH A MASSIVE 3-1 VICTORY 

Abbotsford Canucks General Manager, Ryan Johnson, announced today that the club has signed major junior free agent defenceman Joe Arntsen to a one-year AHL contract through the 2024-25 season. Arntsen joins Abbotsford from the Lethbridge Hurricanes of the Western Hockey League.

Arntsen, 20, spent the entirety of his overage major junior season with Lethbridge in 2023-24, serving as the team’s captain for a second season, and ranking second among team defenders with six goals. He skated in 66 of the Hurricanes 68 regular season games, recording 24 points and 75 penalty minutes, in addition to competing in all four of the club’s postseason games.

The 6-3, 212-pound defenceman departs Lethbridge ranking fourth among franchise defencemen in games played (268), ninth in goals (27) and 12th in points (106) all-time. Arntsen is one of only four players in Hurricanes franchise history to play games for the team across six different seasons.

A native of Swift Current, Saskatchewan, Arntsen represented Saskatchewan at the 2019 Canada Winter Games in Red Deer, Alberta.

CANUCKS SIGN ARNTSEN TO ONE-YEAR AHL CONTRACT

The Abbotsford Canucks kick off their final road trip with head to head against the Calgary Wranglers. Tonight’s game kicked off a series of 4 consecutive games with Calgary.

Starting in net tonight for the Canucks is goaltender Nikita Tolopilo, and he will face Conor Murphy down at the other end. Continuing to play with an 11 and 7 formation, Guillaume Brisebois returns to the lineup, pairing up with defenseman Christian Wolanin. Nick Cicek and Akito Hirose follow suit, and Filip Johansson lines up with Matt Irwin. Sawyer Mynio makes his AHL debut tonight as the 7th defenseman.

Up front, the trio of Aatu Räty, Max Sasson, and Linus Karlsson hold strong, as well as Sheldon Dries, Tristen Nielsen, and Marc Gatcomb. Aidan McDonough and Arshdeep Bains bookend John Stevens, and Chase Wouters and Ty Glover round out the Canucks lineup for the night.

Not much to report after the first 20 minutes of play. Abbotsford managed to stay out of the box, meanwhile Calgary found themselves killing off 3 penalties. The Canucks had some close chances on the powerplay, but Conor Murphy and the post had other plans. Although outshooting the Wranglers 12-5, neither team was able to find the back of the net, and the game was scoreless heading into the second period.

The Canucks looked to continue outplaying and outshooting the Wranglers. Just past the 6-minute mark, Sheldon Dries picked up a feed from Marc Gatcomb and went bar-down to open the scoring and put Abbotsford up 1-0. This came as Dries’ 28th goal of the season, and 200th AHL Career point. The Wrangler managed to keep themselves out of the box, and instead, Nick Cicek took the Canucks first penalty of the game. The Canucks maintained control, while Nikita Tolopilo held on to keep the Canucks up by 1, heading into the final period of the game.   

Looking to keep the momentum going and maintain the lead, the Canucks continued to push. Just past the halfway mark of the period, Arshdeep Bains drove the puck towards the net and dropped passed to Tristen Nielsen who ripped home his 14th goal of the season, and the Canucks found themselves with a 2-goal lead. With about 3 minutes left in the game, the Canucks found themselves battling another penalty, this time, Jordan Osterle netted his 2nd of the season, to cut the Canucks lead in half. With a last stich effort to tie the game, the Wranglers pulled their goaltender. Chase Wouters backhanded the puck down the ice and landed right in the Wranglers' empty net to regain their 2-goal lead, with 19 seconds to play.

The Canucks take their first of 4 consecutive games against the Wranglers, 3-1, and will look to use this momentum into their final road game tomorrow night.

The Abbotsford Canucks are proud to announce that Chase Wouters has been named the club’s 2023-24 IOA/American Specialty AHL Man of the Year. The Canucks’ captain has been selected for a second consecutive season as the club’s nominee for the coveted Yanick Dupré Memorial Award, for his outstanding contributions to the city of Abbotsford and the Fraser Valley community.

Now in his third season with the Canucks and second as captain, Wouters has continued to provide his time and leadership with local charitable organizations in the city of Abbotsford and beyond. Wouters has notably volunteered with the Chilliwack Bowls of Hope Society preparing lunch for children in local schools, as well as visited local patients at the Abbotsford Regional Hospital and Cancer Centre. Wouters spearheaded the Abbotsford Canucks’ participation for a third consecutive season in the Archway Christmas Neighbour program, where players sponsored families in need during the holidays. Collectively, the group spent over $5,000 of their own money shopping for, wrapping, and delivering gifts to families across Abbotsford.

In addition to these initiatives, Wouters has also participated in the Abbotsford Canucks KidsPlay Skate, helping over 100 youth learn to skate along with his teammates at Abbotsford Centre. He participated in the Stick and Skate Social program, an event that provides women of any skill level to be introduced to and try the sport of hockey.

Chase Wouters is now one of 32 finalists for the AHL’s 2023-24 Yanick Dupré Memorial Award, honoring the overall IOA/American Specialty AHL Man of the Year. The league award is named after the former Hershey Bears forward and AHL All-Star who died in 1997 following a 16-month battle with leukemia. The winner of the Yanick Dupré Memorial Award will be announced by the American Hockey League later this month.

WOUTERS NAMED ABBOTSFORD AHL MAN OF THE YEAR FOR SECOND CONSECUTIVE SEASON

The Abbotsford Canucks faced off against the Coachella Valley Firebirds tonight for the final time this season, coming off a 2-1 overtime loss last night. They looked to get back in the win column and take home another 2 points.

Swapping out the netminders, Zach Sawchenko started between the pipes for the Canucks, and Ales Stezka started for the Firebirds. Supporting Sawchenko on the back end were Christian Wolanin and Nick Cicek, followed by Matt Irwin and Akito Hirose. Elias Pettersson paired up with Filip Johansson, and Alex Kannok Leipert drew back into the lineup.

Up front, no change to yesterday’s lineup as Aatu Räty and Linus Karlsson bookended Max Sasson, and Sheldon Dries centered Tristen Nielsen and Marc Gatcomb. Arshdeep Bains lined up next to John Stevens and Jonathan Lekkerimäki, and Aidan McDonough and Chase Wouters round out the Canucks offense.

Not the start the Canucks were looking for, as John Hayden backhanded one past Sawchenko just 30 seconds into the game to put the Firebirds up 1-0. A couple of close calls for the Canucks but no one was able to squeak one through. Shortly after the 10-minute mark, Ian McKinnon intercepted a pass and found the wide-open Canucks net to notch his 1st of the season and put the Firebirds up 2-0. Just a few minutes later Cameron Hughes followed through on the momentum and netted his 24th goal of the season, and the Canucks were down 3-0 by the end of the first period.

As the team returned for the second period, Nikita Tolopilo took over in the Canucks net. The period remained scoreless for the first 7 minutes until Luke Henman broke the silence and netted the Firebird's fourth goal of the game and his 7th of the season. John Stevens came to the rescue at the 13-minute mark when he ripped one through the slot to make it 4-1 for the Canucks. Just a minute later, however, Cale Fleury snuck one through Tolopilo to restore the Firebirds' 4-goal lead. 2 minutes later, the Firebirds got another one, this time Lleyton Roed was the hero when he ripped one from the slot to put the Firebirds up 6-1. The Canucks tried to battle back, but a penalty to Irwin meant that Firebird Kole Lind went through the legs and into the net to make it 7-1. The Canucks were down by 6 heading into the final frame.

Looking to come back in the third, the Canucks d-core held strong and didn’t allow any more Firebirds’ goals. However, just past the halfway point, Arshdeep Bains fakes out the goalie from the point and rips one home for his 15th of the season. The Canucks trailed by 5 through the end of the game.

The Canucks fell 7-2 in their final game against the Coachella Valley Firebirds. Abbotsford will hit the road and head East to take on the Calgary Wranglers, before returning home for their final two regular season games.

The Canucks couldn't quite get it done tonight after falling 7-2 to the Firebirds.

The Abbotsford Canucks continue their homestand tonight as they take on the top-seed Coachella Valley Firebirds. The stakes were high tonight as the canucks look to use their momentum to get their 6th straight win.

Birthday boy Nikita Tolopilo gets the start in net for the Canucks tonight, and he will go head-to-head against Chris Diedger of Coachella Valley. Continuing what has been working, the Canucks have once again chosen to go with an 11 and 7 formation on the ice. Regular d pairing Christian Wolanin and Jett Woo kick off the blue line, followed by Matt Irwin and Filip Johansson. Nick Cicek suits up next to Akito Hirose, and once again Elias Pettersson solidifies the back end.

Up front, Aatu Räty, Max Sasson, and Linus Karlsson continue to produce together and kick off the offense, followed by Tristen Nielsen, Sheldon Dries, and Marc Gatcomb. Arshdeep Bains returns from his stint with the Vancouver Canucks, so he and Jonathan Lekkerimäki bookended John Stevens, whereas Chase Wouters and Aidan McDonough solidify the front end.

The first period got off to a hot start when Sheldon Dries and John Hayden dropped the gloves just over a minute into the game. Both teams came into this game on winning streaks, the pressure was high. The Canucks had a couple of great chances and outshot the Firebirds 11 to 6 at the end of the period, but none were enough to get on the board.

Emotions arose and a fire was lit as the second period ensued. A bunch of penalties were called, and brawls were had, but ultimately the goaltenders stole the show stopping every shot that came their way during the second. The teams had some good looks but once again the goaltenders held on at each end.

Much of the third was left with some great chances but the Canucks, but it wasn’t until just after the 4-minute mark that Jonathan Lekkerimäki ripped one from the point straight past Driedger and into the Firebirds net. Jonathan notched his first AHL goal, with assists credited to Christian Wolanin and John Stevens and the Canucks took the first lead of the game, 1-0. Nikita Tolopilo held on for the rest of the period, but with just 48 seconds left in the game, Max McCormick was able to sneak one past to tie the game up and force overtime.

Overtime began, and while the Firebirds retained possession of the puck for the beginning, Christian Wolanin came just shy of taking it home for Abbotsford. It was just after that Max McCormick caught a breakaway and was able to send it to the back of the Canucks net to win it in overtime.

The Canucks fall 2-1 in overtime against the Coachella Valley Firebirds, but they will battle back tomorrow for the final time before heading to Calgary.

This honour will be granted to the Canuck who best exemplifies the qualities of leadership and commitment, as well as showcases what it means to be a Canuck in the community. Voting Now Open for 2023.24 Abbotsford Canucks Team Awards

Vancouver, B.C. – With the team’s regular season home schedule coming to a close and a playoff spot secured, the Abbotsford Canucks are taking the opportunity to recognize individuals who make a difference in their community. Today, the Abbotsford Canucks are proud to announce further details regarding BCLC Community Heroes Night on Saturday, April 6th as the team hosts the Coachella Valley Firebirds.  

BCLC Community Heroes Night is dedicated to those individuals who positively impact the lives of others, and whose actions further contribute to the betterment of our community. The Canucks take pride in celebrating these local heroes.  

“Community heroes are among those who represent the best of our society, especially here in the Fraser Valley,” said Rick Comeau, General Manager, Abbotsford Centre. “These individuals don’t seek recognition or accolades for the duties and services they perform, but we wish to take this night, along with our fans, to thank them for all they do for the City of Abbotsford and Fraser Valley as a whole.” 

There will be a ceremonial puck drop featuring members of the Abbotsford Police Department (APD) and Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service (AFRS). 

The Abbotsford Centre concourse will be filled with activations throughout the game. Fans can find APD and AFRS in Sections 115 and 111, respectively. Section 101 will feature a photo booth with Superheroes such as Spiderman, Batman, Wolverine, and Wonder Woman, as well as an airbrush tattoo station. There will be mascots from APD, AFRS, and BC Ambulance Service in attendance as well. 

Section 106 will see BC Ambulance Service hosting an information booth, Section 112 will host Central Fraser Valley Search and Rescue, and Sections 113 and 114 will see BCLC PlayNow hold an activation.

Abbotsford Canucks to Recognize Local Heroes on BCLC Community Heroes Night 

Drenched in sweat after a hard practice at Rogers Arena, Arturs Silovs sat down at his stall in the locker room and took a few seconds to catch his breath before taking off his gear to chat with the Vancouver media.

“Give the guy a minute,” was yelled from a few stalls over as Silovs cracked a sly smirk.

It is one of those moments where you are not just a call-up anymore, but instead, a teammate.

The young goaltender has worked hard to get to the NHL and has taken advantage of all his experiences since arriving in North America as an 18-year-old in the summer of 2019.

Now, at just 23 years old, Vancouver Canucks’ goaltender Silovs’ mindset in developing his game has gifted him the opportunity to see early success in his burgeoning hockey career.

You need to have a strong work ethic to be a successful NHL contributor, but Silovs has learned at an early age that work ethic does not directly translate into success.

“Your work ethic is important, but you have to understand what you’re working on because work ethic can’t really improve you if you aren’t led where to go,” said Silovs.

“The biggest thing is having a goal of what you are trying to achieve, and we call that an ideal goal or a picture of yourself. Everyone’s goal is different, and you have to find it in yourself. It’s a tough journey. That’s something we’re often talking about with the goalie coaches."

Silovs has bought into the goaltending program and the Canucks are pleased with how the young goaltender is committing to the development path that has been laid out for him.

It all starts with Director of Goaltending Ian Clark at the NHL level, but it is a tight bond between Clark and Goaltending Development Coach and AHL Goaltending Coach Marko Torenius. The two work well together and there’s plenty of communication between Clark and Torenius so that the Canucks can get the best out of all of their prospects.

Silovs currently sits at the front of the line of goalie prospects that includes: Nikita Tolopilo (AHL), Aku Koskenvuo (NCAA), and Ty Young (WHL).

“For a goaltender, especially a 23-year-old that came in last year and played five games at the NHL level and then going to the World Championship, it's a high-pressure tournament. And then being the guy down in Abbotsford, right from the start of the year, to now get some NHL games. It is huge for his development and getting to work with Clarkie in NHL practices. I mean, you got to think his development has just increased over the last I think the last six or seven months,” said Head Coach Rick Tocchet.

Even though Tocchet does not claim to be a goalie guy, he notices growth in Silovs’ game. Tocchet started Silovs five times last season and sees an even calmer goaltender this season. The maturity Silovs plays with this season which is a sign of development working well with players in their early twenties.

“You can tell Clarkie has been working with him,” said Tocchet. “He's not sliding all over the place. He's not flopping, he is there for the second shot. You can tell. That is when you know the goalie is listening and you've got a mature goalie – when he is there for the second shot and he’s not out of the net.”

Silovs believes that this stint in the NHL is beneficial for him at this point in his career. The chance to face NHL shots in practice is extremely important for a goaltender on the brink of making the jump. He likes that the bar is raised at this level in both games and practice.

“Shots are more accurate, have more speed, and overall, everything is more demanding," said Silovs. "At every level, everyone tries their best but here you have to get out of yourself more and more, because there's more pressure. All combining, I am finding that extra depth, which I probably would not achieve without adding pressure.”

“I think it's great just getting experience and getting into games. I’m understanding that I can play at this level. And I have to work more to be better, and better at this level. But I think it is a good start.”

This season feels like the lights are a little less bright for Silovs. He feels more comfortable in an NHL locker room and believes he has made improvements on the ice about being able to play a calmer game in the crease. 

Silovs may only be up with the big club until the return of Thatcher Demko from injury, but that also sets him up to head into the AHL playoffs with confidence from his strong play at the NHL level. 

“It's exciting because playoff time is always the time you can show that you can do something,” said Silovs about the upcoming AHL playoffs. “It has not been an easy year for us down there in Abbotsford. So, I figure that it is a great opportunity to show what we can do and just show something more.”

The youngster will continue to be a sponge while he is up in the NHL and is excited to get into the playoffs with the Abbotsford Canucks in the coming weeks.

Silovs was selected by the Canucks in the sixth round of the 2019 NHL Entry Draft and moved to North America from Latvia to give himself the best chance to develop. 

He played a full season in the OHL with the Barrie Colts before coming to the Canucks during the COVID season. During the 2021-22 season, Silovs split time between the Abbotsford Canucks and the Trois-Rivières Lions in the ECHL. 

He then took over as the starter for Abbotsford during the 2022-23 season and played in 44 games during the regular season. On top of those AHL games, Silovs made five starts for Rick Tocchet and the Vancouver Canucks late in the year. 

He then went on to play for Latvia in the 2023 World Championships and played so well that he was named MVP of the tournament.

For now, it is all about growth, and Silovs continues to impress with how he attacks every day.

 Building Blue: Arturs Silovs Continues to Mature as a Goaltender and a Person

The Abbotsford Canucks looked to round out their season series with a win as they faced off against the Manitoba Moose for the final time this season.

Zach Sawchenko will return to the crease tonight for the first time on home ice, and he will face former Canucks goaltender Collin Delia. The lineup remains unchanged as of last night, with an 11 and 7 formation. Jett Woo and Christian Wolanin kicked off the blue liners, followed by Matt Irwin and Nick Cicek. Akito Hirose and Filip Johansson stuck together, and Elias Pettersson bookends it.

Up front, Max Sasson centered Aatu Räty and Linus Karlsson, followed by Tristen Nielsen, Sheldon Dries, and Jonathan Lekkerimäki. Aidan McDonough and Marc Gatcomb bookended John Stevens, and Chase Wouters and Ty Glover solidified the Canucks offense.

The game was off to a quick start as the Canucks found themselves on a penalty kill around 3 minutes in, but Nick Cicek intercepted a play in the Canucks zone and found Sheldon Dries on the breakaway, where he notched his 4th shorthanded goal of the year. This came as his 26th goal of the season and gave the Canucks an early 1-0 lead. Shortly after the halfway mark in the period, Elias Pettersson passed to Tristen Nielsen, who ripped it past Collin Delia on an open timer, to put the Canucks up 2. Elias Pettersson registered his 1st career AHL point on Tristen’s 13th goal of the season. Just 2 minutes until the end of the period, Tyrel Bauer was able to squeak one through Sawchenko to cut the Canucks lead in half, and Abbotsford was up 2-1 heading into the second period.

The Canucks desperate to regain their 2-goal lead, got to work quickly. An early penalty to the Moose allowed the Canucks to find themselves on a power play just 19 seconds into the period. Aatu Räty ripped one in front of the net, where Sheldon Dries was there to tip it in for his 27th goal of the season. Thomas Milic swapped places with Collin Delia and took over the Moose’s net for the remainder of the game. There was a lull in goals for about 10 minutes until Jeffery Viel was able to just squeak one through Sawchenko to net his 15th goal of the season and bring the Moose within 1. The Canucks were not happy with the call, and just 30 seconds later a cross-ice feed from Chase Wouters to Aatu Räty ended up in the back of the Moose's net, and their 2-goal lead was restored. The Canucks headed into the final frame leading 4-2.

As the third period began, the Abbotsford looked to maintain their lead and take home their 5th straight win. The Moose put up a fight but Zach Sawchenko was a brick wall for the entirety of the period. With just under 5 minutes to pay, a beautiful pass from John Stevens found Linus Karlsson in front of the net, and he was able to secure their 5th goal of the game and pull ahead by 3.

The Canucks sweep the back-to-back against the Moose and come up with their 5th win in a row. The Canucks will get back to work in practice before taking on the top seed in the Pacific Division, the Coachella Valley Firebirds on the weekend.

The Canucks defeat the Manitoba Moose 5-2 in thier 5th straight Victory 

The Abbotsford Canucks returned home to begin a 4 game homestand, kicking this off with the Manitoba Moose. They are 1 and 1 in their series, and the Canucks look to take this one and clinch a playoff spot.

Nikita Tolopilo gets the start tonight in net for the Canucks and he will face Thomas Milic at the opposing end. Once again the Canucks chose to go with an 11 and 7 formation, and kicking things off at the blue line is old linemates Christian Wolanin and Jett Woo. Matt Irwin and Nick Cicek line up together, followed by Akito Hirose and Filip Johansson, and Elias Pettersson rounds out the defense.

Upfront, Aatu Räty, Max Sasson, and Linus Karlsson trio up to kick off the offense, followed by Tristen Nielsen, Sheldon Dries, and Jonathan Lekkerimäki. Marc Gatcomb joins John Stevens and Aidan McDonough, and Ty Glover and Chase Wouters backend the Canucks forwards.

It was an action-packed first period, with the Moose kicking things off after Ville Heinola rips one past Tolopilo from the point to give the Moose a 1-0 lead just 2 minutes in. Shortly after that, Max Sasson and Aidan McDonough find themselves on a 2-1 coming down the rush, and Aidan McDonough notches his 10th of the season and ties the game up at 1. Continuing this back-and-forth game, Jeff Malott secures his 20th goal of the season after the Canucks find themselves on the penalty kill. The Moose regained the lead 2-1 but quickly found themselves back on a penalty kill of their own. Setting themselves up, Sheldon Dries shoots the puck after receiving a pass from Aatu Räty and notches his 25th goal of the season to tie the game up at 2. Just 1 minute later, Jett Woo rips one from the blue line for his 7th goal of the season and gives the Canucks their first lead of the game. The Canucks headed into the second period up 3-2.

It was a slower period in the second, with lots of chances on net for both teams, but neither was able to capitalize. It was a scoreless 2nd period, until about 13 minutes in when Linus Karlsson found himself on the doorstep when a pass from Max Sasson came his way, and he tips it past Milic. The Canucks had found themselves with a 2 goal lead. Both teams were successfully able to kill off all the penalties that came their way to keep the score unchanged at 4-2, heading into the third period.

The Canucks looked to maintain their lead through the end of the game, in an attempt to punch their ticket to the playoffs and jump the Pacific division standings. The Canucks headed to their 5th power play of the game, but an intercepted turnover from the Moose allowed Dominic Toninato to get a shorthanded goal, and bring the Moose within 1. Manitoba pulled their goalie with just over 3 minutes to go, but Nikita Tolopilo and the rest of the Canucks kept the puck out of their net to secure the victory.

The Canucks defeated the Manitoba Moose 4-3 in a playoff-clinching victory and leapfrogged from 7th place to 5th place in the Pacific division standings.

Abbotsford will take on the Moose once again tomorrow night for the final time this season, before taking on Coachella Valley over the weekend.

The Abbotsford Canucks take on the Colorado Eagles for the final time this season, and they looked to use the momentum from last night’s win and take home another 2 points in today’s game.

A change to the Canucks netminder, as Zach Sawchenko takes the starting position between the pipes tonight, and he faces Ivan Prosvetov of the Eagles. The Canucks chose to go with an 11 and 7 formation and shakes things up with the d-core. Christian Wolanin takes his spot on the first line, alongside Alex Kannok Leipert, and Jett Woo pairs up with Matt Irwin. Akito Hirose slots back into the lineup, and he lines up next to Nick Cicek. Elias Pettersson makes his AHL debut and he fits in as the 7th and final defenseman to round out the back end.

Up front, a mix-up to the offense leaves Tristen Nielsen and Sheldon Dries as a duo on the first line, and Linus Karlsson joins Aatu Räty and Max Sasson as they move up to the second line. John Steven centered Aidan McDonough and Jonathan Lekkerimäki, where Ty Glover, Chase Wouters, and Marc Gatcomb solidify the front end.

Abbotsford got off to a hot start when Max Sasson found the net off a feed from Linus Karlsson to give the Canucks a 1-0 lead just 1 minute and 33 seconds into the game. This came as his 18th goal of the season and set a new #AbbyCanucks franchise record for longest consecutive point streak of 8 games. The Eagles were able to hold the Canucks to just 3 shots in the first period but were unsuccessful at netting one themselves. Abbotsford held on to their 1-0 lead, moving into the second period.

Looking to maintain their lead, Abbotsford was granted a powerplay just 5 minutes in, but Jack Ahcan intercepted a turnover and sent it cross ice to Tanner Kero who notched his 12th goal of the season with another shorthanded goal for Colorado. Aggression was building as the game went on, and the Canucks were faced with killing off a few more penalties this period but were successful in keeping the score knotted up at 1. The game is following in yesterday’s footsteps, and both teams will push for the go-ahead goal in the third period.

The Canucks came out strong in the third period, really looking to sweep the series against the Eagles. Just 4 minutes in, Aatu Räty tipped in a shot from Max Sasson for the go-ahead goal and his 17th of the season. The Canucks found themselves up 2-1 and headed to a powerplay just after the halfway mark in the final frame, with tensions rising. Linus Karlsson was able to capitalize on the powerplay, grabbing his 17th of the season off a pass from Aatu Räty, to give the Canucks some more insurance. In a desperate attempt to get back in the game, the Eagles pulled their goalie with just under 3 minutes to go, but Linus Karlsson ripped the puck down the ice, straight into the back of the net to secure his 100th AHL point, and give the Canucks a 3 goal lead. A late fight between Jett Woo and Brad Hunt meant the Eagles would head to a very late powerplay. In an attempt to kill the penalty, Matt Irwin ripped one down the ice, and the puck went right into the empty net with just 2 seconds left to play, to get his 5th goal of the season.

With 4 unanswered goals in the third period, the Canucks take this one 5-1, to sweep the back-to-back and take home 4 points this weekend.

Abbotsford returns home on Tuesday and Wednesday to take on the Manitoba Moose for the final time this season, before facing Coachella Valley next weekend.

The Canucks sweep the back to back after a 5-1 victory against the Colorado Eagles

The Abbotsford Canucks are back on the road, this time taking on the Colorado Eagles on a quest to climb up the Pacific division standings. The Canucks are coming off a 5-2 win in Manitoba, but haven’t been able to crack the Eagles in their last 4 matchups.

Starting in net tonight for the Canucks is Nikita Tolopilo, and he will be going head-to-head with Ivan Prosvetov. Helping protect the back end is defensive duo Nick Cicek and Jett Woo, followed by Christian Wolanin and Guillaume Brisebois. Rounding out the men at the blue line is Matt Irwin and Filip Johansson.

No change to the top offensive line, as Tristen Nielsen, Sheldon Dries, and Linus Karlsson stick together. Jonathan Lekkerimäki finds himself on a line with Aidan McDonough and John Stevens as he dresses for his first AHL game. Max Sasson continues to center Aatu Räty and Marc Gatcomb, and Dmitri Zlodeev and Ty Glover wing on either end of Chase Wouters to close out the Canucks lineup.

It was a fairly even first period, with both teams registering 6 shots a piece. A few dangerous opportunities but both goaltenders were able to hold on to keep the score minimal. The Canucks found themselves on a powerplay mid-way through the first, but Ondrej Pavel intercepted a pass and sniped one through Tolopilo to put the Eagles up 1-0 on his 6th goal of the season. Another powerplay was granted to the Canucks right after but they found no success, and they headed into the second down by 1.

An early start to the second period after Max Sasson found the back of the Eagles' net after a series of passes between Jonathan Lekkerimäki and Aidan McDonough. Max Sasson registered his 17th of the season with the equalizer, and Jonathan Lekkerimäki notched his first-ever AHL point. A few penalties were given to the Canucks but their penalty kill was successful every time and no one was able to find the back of the net for the rest of the period. It was tied at 1, heading into the third.

Tied at the beginning of the third, both teams were looking for the go-ahead goal and looking to avoid overtime. Both teams got caught up in penalties, but neither were able to capitalize and take home the win in regulation.

They headed into overtime where Jett Woo called game just a minute and a half in, when he picked up a great feed from Sheldon Dries and ripped it past Prosvetov for his 6th of the season. The Canucks picked up a win in Colorado and add another 2 points to their tally. They'll look to carry this momentum into tomorrow’s game where they will close out their season series against Colorado, before returning home to take on the Manitoba Moose and then the Coachella Valley Firebirds.

The Canucks defeat the Colorado Eagles 2-1 in overtime

Jonathan Lekkerimäki’s arrival in North America is just another step in the long process of becoming a better pro hockey player.

With his season finished in the SHL, the 19-year-old winger will set up shop in Abbotsford for the next few weeks in the hopes of getting a call to return to Sweden to try out for a spot on the World Championship roster.

“It would be awesome, it’s always been a dream to play for the national team,” said Lekkerimäki. “It is a challenge. Everyone is better, [they are] at higher speed and [have] bigger guys. So, it would be challenging, of course, but we will have to see what happens.”

In an effort to help Lekkerimäki’s chances of representing his country, the Canucks decided it was best for him to practice and perhaps play with their AHL team instead of training by himself in Sweden. This short trial will also give the club an opportunity to get a better understanding of what Lekkerimäki needs to continue his development.

“We are happy to have a chance to work more closely with Jonathan over the next little while,” said Canucks General Manager Patrik Allvin. “Jeremy Colliton and his staff as well as our development team have done a great job in helping our players the past couple of seasons. We have seen a number of guys including Nils Höglander, Vasily Podkolzin, Linus Karlsson and Arshdeep Bains benefit from spending time in the AHL and developing their skillset. Over the next few weeks, Jonathan has a great opportunity to learn more about the North American game and our organization."

Like any player, what Lekkerimäki does with this time as an Abbotsford Canuck and any future opportunities is totally up to him. This taste of AHL action will not only help him prepare for the Worlds but will also get him set for training camp this fall.

“I’m excited, it’s going to be really fun,” Lekkerimäki said about coming to North America. “It is my dream to play in the NHL and if I get a chance for that, I will do everything to prepare for that to be my future. That said, right now my focus is learning as much as I can from my time with the Abbotsford Canucks.”

Lekkerimäki finished the season with 19 goals and 12 assists through 46 games played. It was a strong bounce-back year for a player who had a slow start to his pro career a couple of seasons ago because of a bout of mononucleosis.

“Over this season, I have felt really good. So, [I am] just [trying to] keep it going,” said Lekkerimäki. “I do my best every day to prepare for a game and do my best at the game. I’m also not just focused too much on the points. I just try to be better every day.”

While Lekkerimäki can lean into his offensive ability it will take more than that to succeed at the next level. The Canucks development staff wanted to see if he could add more to his game as he prepares to make the jump to North America next season.

Helping assist their European prospects has been a focus of the Canucks management group since Patrik Allvin and Jim Rutherford took over. Former Stanley Cup champion, Triple Gold Club member, and former Canuck, Mikael Samuelsson is at games, meeting with prospects for meals, and keeping an eye on the pulse of the SHL and other leagues in Europe.

Samuelsson spent three seasons with the Chicago Blackhawks as a development coach before three seasons with an Allsvenskan league club as their General Manager. He is now in year two with the Canucks’ development team and has learned a lot about dealing with prospect development.

“When I approach a player like Lekki, I say, ‘What did they want? What are they feeling?’ It's not about my feelings,” said Samuelsson with a laugh. “This is their time to shine, and I am here to help them. I am not here to talk a lot about myself or think highly of myself. I share my thoughts, sure, but these kids are my main focus and the first thing I have to do is be able to listen to their thoughts and feelings.”

“When it comes to Jonathan, he is expecting a lot of himself and when he is the MVP of the World Junior Championships or scores crazy goals in the SHL, he stays calm within himself. He does not show any cockiness but really believes in himself and he has no reason to not believe in himself with the way he plays.”

Samuelsson is focusing on the player but also the person. He wants the young players that he is working with to know that they can feel comfortable speaking with him and know that he is in their corner for support and guidance.

“It's been really good,” said Lekkerimäki about working with Mikael Samuelsson. “He has helped me with things like one-on-one battles, being strong on the puck and how to be more active on loose pucks. He has good experience, and we have good chats with each other. I listen to him, and he will also listen to me.”

Samuelsson has had a close eye on Lekkerimäki for the past four or five years and knows him as well as anyone in the Canucks organization. Samuelsson talks a lot about developing your hockey IQ and how it is necessary for a smooth transition to pro hockey in North America.

According to Samuelsson, there was growth in how Lekkerimäki handled the puck in the neutral zone this year. He also saw a player with a high-running motor in the defensive end of the ice. That created more opportunities for him to have full-ice rushes into the offensive zone, creating the chances for Lekkerimäki to utilize his best skills.

“Every minute that he got, he deserved it,” said Samuelsson. “Almost every time that team had a scoring chance, he was involved. Offence often comes from defence and I know I sound like an old coach saying that, but it is true.”

Lekkerimäki is still young and must undergo a massive adjustment in the coming months. Getting him over to Abbotsford for the next few weeks before he heads back to try out with Sweden’s National Team is just a step in the right direction on making this player more comfortable with his upcoming full-time move to the West Coast this summer.

The road of development is a long one and the hockey club is committed to making sure that Lekkerimäki is supported and comfortable with his future in the Canucks’ organization.

Jonathan Lekkerimäki Joins Abbotsford Canucks

Vancouver Canucks practices are fast-paced and full of detail from the assembly of coaches on the ice.

There is plenty of time spent on breakouts, battle drills, odd-man rush situations, forechecks, and special teams.

Aside from the hour or so that practice typically is, there is a lot of extra work put in before and after the drills.

Nils Höglander is a player you can find on the ice early on most days.

His goal for the extra work is to accomplish some of the things he cannot do during a full-team practice.

“I think it makes me get ready for practice and get a little bit warm before,” said Höglander. “Little things to be better like work on stickhandling or tipping pucks. In practice, you don't really have those opportunities to do those. So, before practice is a good time to do it.”

Höglander likes the fresh ice before practice, and he is out early every day putting in the extra work.

You will often spot Höglander working out with his close friend Vasily Podkolzin. Höglander and Podkolzin will spend 20-40 minutes before practice working on passing plays and tip drills with each other and some coaches.

Podkolzin was out early with Sergei Gonchar this past Thursday ahead of the Montreal Canadiens game and had a focus on working against bigger defencemen and picking up some tips from Gonchar about how to attack from the wall on a bigger body.

“If you want to get and stay at this level you’ve got to practice and you have to work out harder and more,” said Podkolzin. “When I was a kid, I watched Sergei and the Sedins on TV at the Olympics and World Cups. It's pretty funny [to] think about now being able to work with legends and be listening to advice. Even today, Sergei and I were here trying something new.”

Podkolzin and Höglander spend time rotating and sending shots to each other while working on tipping pucks while skating to the dirty areas of the ice.

“I especially like to work on tips because you will only get one or two in a normal practice,” said Podkolzin. “But it is a big part of the game and maybe our work will give us one or two goals on the season. And goals are always fun.”

Head coach Rick Tocchet likes to see some of his younger players putting in the extra work before practice and did not want to compare Podkolzin to his former teammate Jaromir Jagr, but Tocchet certainly appreciates Podkolzin’s work ethic.

“Podzy craves it. You almost need to kick that guy off the ice,” said Tocchet. “He has to find the balance because he will stay out there all day. I’m not comparing [Podkolzin] to Jagr, but in his early years, you had to kick him off the ice because it was actually too much. We have to make sure Podzy doesn’t get too much information because he is at his best when his mind can be free.”

Tocchet also praised Höglander for the extra work he has put in and noted that the work he is putting in before practice is beginning to show up consistently in his play.

The two players from the 2020 NHL Entry Draft were selected for their skill at the time but both Höglander and Podkolzin had the stamp of ‘Rink Rat’ on them even when they were young teenagers.

Now, as 22 and 23-year-olds, they continue to get as much ice time as they can but are primed to make the right steps in their game with their extra work due to the guidance of the Sedin twins, Sergei Gonchar, Rick Tocchet, and the rest of the coaching staff.

Nils Höglander and Vasily Podkolzin: Tips for Their Every Day Extra Work

The Abbotsford Canucks played the second game in the back-to-back against the Manitoba Moose, and they looked to get back into the win column after a 3-2 loss yesterday.

In net for the Canucks this morning is Zach Sawchenko, who registers his first start of the season with the Abbotsford Canucks. The Canucks have chosen to go with an 11 and 7 formation today, with Jett Woo and Nick Cicek kicking off the 7 defensemen. Matt Irwin and Filip Johansson Stick together, followed by Akito Hirose and Guillaume Brisebois.  Christian Wolanin makes his return to the Canucks lineup for the first time since January, as the 7th defencemen today.

No change to the first 3 lines of forwards, as Tristen Nielsen, Sheldon Dries, and Linus Karlsson kicked off the offense, followed by Aidan McDonough, John Stevens, and Arshdeep Bains. Aatu Räty and Marc Gatcomb wing Max Sasson, and Cooper Walker slotted back into the lineup alongside Chase Wouters.

The game kicked off quickly after Aatu Räty found the back of the net just 2 minutes into the game, off a feed from Marc Gatcomb, and the Canucks took an early lead, 1-0. The Canucks with a strong start, continued to fire shots on net, but a hooking call around the 11-minute mark, lead to a quick goal for Nikita Chibrikov. Just 8 seconds into the penalty, Chibrikov tipped in the shot from Ville Heinola, for his 17th of the season, and tied the game up at 1.  Just two minutes later, Arshdeep Bains found himself on the breakaway after a feed from Christian Wolanin. Bains fired on net, the shot was deflected, but Bains snuck in behind Delia, to chip it in the net, for his 14th of the season, and the Canucks were up 2-1. The Moose pulled Collin Delia, and Thomas Milic took his place in net for the remainder of the game. Just 20 seconds after Bains regained the lead for the Canucks, Axel Jonsson-Fjälby netted his 10th of the season and tied the game back up at 2. The Moose would finish out the first period on the man advantage that would then get carried over into the start of the second.

It was a strong second period for the Canucks. After successfully killing off the remainder of Manitoba’s powerplay, Christian Wolanin would go on to fire a laser straight to the back of the net, just 2 minutes into the period. This goal came as his 4th of the season, and first after being out with an injury for 2 months. The Canucks found themselves on their first man advantage in the game, where Tristen Nielsen was able to pick up Sheldon Dries’ rebound to give the Canucks a 3-goal lead, for his 12th of the season. Just 3 minutes later, Marc Gatcomb joined the scoring party after intercepting a Moose turnover, and quickly turned around and fired it on net for his 9th of the season. Three unanswered goals for the Canucks in the second period, allowed them to head into the third period with a 5-2 lead.

Looking to get back into the win column, the Canucks were determined to retain the lead and bounce back after yesterday. Zach Sawchenko held on for all of the shots he faced in the second and third periods to hold on to the lead. Neither team was able to find the back of the net in the third, which meant the Canucks would take this one 5-2 in a battle-back game.

Aatu Räty had himself a 4-point night, and Zach Sawchenko registered his first win as an Abbotsford Canuck in today's game.

The Canucks will head to Colorado next to take on the Eagles this weekend for their final matchup of the season before returning home to face the Manitoba Moose once again.

The Abbotsford Canucks are back on the road this afternoon, as they headed east to take on the Manitoba Moose for their first matchup this season.

With Artūrs Šilovs still up with the big club, Nikita Tolopilo retains control over the Canucks net, facing Thomas Milic of the Manitoba Moose. Helping Tolopilo at the blue line are d-men Nick Cicek and Jett Woo, followed by Matt Irwin and Filip Johansson, who is celebrating his 24th birthday today. Guillaume Brisebois returns to the Canucks lineup after missing the game against Henderson on Sunday, and he will slot in with Akito Hirose.

Up front, standing strong is trio Tristen Nielsen, Sheldon Dries, and Linus Karlsson, followed by John Stevens, Aidan McDonough, and Arshdeep Bains. A line that continued to produce on Sunday’s game remains unchanged today as Max Sasson centered Aatu Räty and Marc Gatcomb. Closing out the Canucks lineup is Chase Wouters, Ty Glover and Dmitri Zlodeev.

The first period seems to be interrupted quite a bit by whistles. Neither team could really generate any scary chances on the net until after the midway point of the period. The Moose really ramped up, picking up turnover, heading into the attacking zone and Kyle Capobianco was the first and only one to capitalize in the period after dancing around the offensive zone before ripping one straight to the back of the Canucks net. This goal came as his 9th of the season and put the Moose up 1-0. The Canucks struggled to register many shots on net and headed into the second period down by 1.

Picking up the pace in the second period, the Canucks got called for elbowing, served by Jett Woo. Kristian Reichal was able to capitalize on their powerplay, just 5 minutes into the period, and the Moose found themselves with a 2 goal lead. Just 30 seconds later, a mishap on the Moose’s turnover landed right on Max Sasson’s stick, where he was perfectly placed in front of the net to notch his 16th goal of the season and cut the Moose’s lead in half. Just 3 minutes later, after a series of passes, Linus Karlsson was able to pick up the rebound from Aatu Räty to notch his 16th goal of the season and knot the game up at 2 after 2. The Canucks were only able to register 6 shots on net during the second period, but luckily all they needed was 2 to find themselves in a more comfortable spot heading into the final frame.

The Canucks looked to generate more shots on net and hoped to pull ahead to take this one in regulation. An unlucky penalty to John Stevens around the halfway mark, led to Jeffery Viel notching his 13th of the season after Nikita Tolopilo made a ton of tremendous saves. The Moose found themselves up 3-2 with 12 minutes left to play. The Canucks did not ease up the pressure, but they were unable to come up with enough shots to tie up the game.

Despite erasing a 2-goal deficit, the Canucks drop this one, 3-2 against the Manitoba Moose, and look to battle back tomorrow.

Development is never linear.

Its only constant is time.

Evolving takes self-reflection and having the right support to assist you on your path. Fully believing in yourself requires sacrifices; sometimes those sacrifices do not show immediate success.

And sometimes, you need to reset, trust in the process, and let your work ethic be the straw that stirs the drink. Podkolzin acknowledges the role that Abbotsford Head Coach, Jeremy Colliton, has played on his development journey.

"I have to thank Jeremy for trusting me and helping me develop my game,” said Podkolzin. “It’s pretty good when you aren’t caring about your ice time. You will play a lot, and on the power play, and have trust [from the coach]. I give a response to that.”

Seeing time and effort come to fruition can be extremely gratifying and that is what Vasily Podkolzin is experiencing right now after spending the first five months of the season in the AHL.

The 22-year-old has learned a lot in those five months but as much as his game has improved, his thought process and planning for the future has been aided by some long stretches of reflection and the realization that nothing comes easy in professional hockey.

Besides the ability to look inside to assess and analyze things to improve on the ice, the young Russian winger has also been able to connect with other mentors and family members to talk about life both in and out of hockey. That list includes his parents in Russia, whom Podkolzin says he calls almost each and every day.

The commitment to his craft has never waned and this is not the first time in Podkolzin’s professional career that he has had to re-evaluate his own game to have success.

As a 17-year-old, Podkolzin made the jump from U17 hockey to the professional ranks in Russia. He played in the KHL and quickly was not the top dog anymore. Those KHL years assisted Podkolzin in growing as a player and a person.

Podkolzin looks at those three years as a period in his life where he was learning how to learn. When you are 17 years old, development is not about getting better every day. It’s about learning how to get better every day.

Even with three years of professional hockey in Russia under his belt, Podkolzin had a lot to learn about North American hockey. The journey has not been easy for him, but he isn’t the first player to face some adversity trying to find a pathway to play in the top league in the world.

Podkolzin was evolving right in front of our eyes at the Abbotsford Centre. He grew his self-confidence and from there he became a volume shooter – something we have never seen him be before in his six years of pro hockey.

Podkolzin began believing in his abilities with the puck on his stick.

Or with the puck on its way to him for a one-timer...

Being defensively responsible was something driven into him during his seasons in the KHL. Some nights, we would see Podkolzin play for three minutes due to an early mistake and other nights, we would see him be the best player on his KHL team and he would play 20 minutes a night.

“It’s hard for me because I don’t want to make mistakes,” said Podkolzin. “I like to play responsible and clean and make the right plays and be responsible for my position, but Jeremy [Colliton] and the other coaches told me that you are going to make mistakes and it’s true, I made mistakes. It’s all about how you react to it and that was a big lesson to me.”

“It was out of my comfort zone because I wanted to prove to myself and the coaches that I can be an NHL player and learning to deal with mistakes was a big point for me.”

There is still plenty of room for Podkolzin to grow his game and he has been impressing the coach with his physical play.

Podkolzin learned an important lesson from his time in Abbotsford about being physical and being forceful. Colliton told Podkolzin that he needs to finish every hit with authority because if he does this on every shift, the defencemen will have to move the puck a half-second earlier. Podkolzin’s strength has shown in the past, but it is something that the 22-year-old is beginning to show a little bit more at the NHL level.

In each of his last three games, Podkolzin has led the Canucks in hits, and this is exactly what Colliton was talking about in Abbotsford. He has taught Podkolzin something that is now paying dividends in the NHL.

At just 22 years old, Podkolzin believes there is a lot of room to improve and advance his game. He is continuing to pick up lessons wherever he can find them and his ability to let himself learn from a mistake is only going to help him as he looks to raise his skill level in the coming years.

Besides growing into a hockey player, Podkolzin has grown up a lot since having a baby and getting married. Though he had a good laugh about being stronger after he was explained what ‘dad strength’ is, Podkolzin believes that having a strong wife who manages his home life and gives him no worries is incredible for his mentality and ability to focus on hockey.

“On the ice, I’m never thinking about other things, it’s just hockey because at home, I know everything is good.”

Podkolzin acknowledges the role that Abbotsford Head Coach, Jeremy Colliton, has played on his development journey.
